The New School was founded in 1972 to provide a stimulating educational environment emphasising academic excellence, creativity and social responsibility.

The school places the child first and a policy of maintaining small class groups allows for the maximum level of interaction between class and teacher. Shared responsibility has always been a vital part of the structure of the school and children from an early age are encouraged to play an active role in the school community.

The New School is an international school for students from Nursery to University entrance level. The English National Curriculum, followed throughout the school, is modified only to meet the needs of the international child. Students can be prepared for the Italian State exams (5a Elementare and 3a Media) and the American SATs. All teachers hold University degrees and teaching certificates and have, on average, eight years' teaching experience.

Nursery and Kindergarten: Children are cared for in a warm, stimulating environment which offers new experiences every day. Learning takes place through imaginative play, language games and a range of creative activities, from music making to art and craft. Daily routines incorporate structured learning activity times as well as times set aside for individual choice when children are free to progress at their own level.

Primary School: Children work in vibrant, stimulating classrooms where the emphasis is on individual development. Science, History and Geography are treated as discrete subjects and excellent resources allow for a wide range of learning experiences. The English National Literacy and Numeracy Strategies are followed throughout the Primary school and provision is made for children in need of extra help. All children participate in Art, Music and Physical Education and every classroom has a computer. Primary children have supervised access to the Internet and are encouraged to manage their own learning and think independently.

Senior School: Courses in the Senior School lead to the IGCSE, GCSE and GCE AS and A2 Level examinations (Cambridge and London Universities) for which the school is an official centre. Drama, Art and Information Technology are included in the core curriculum and a wide range of extra-curricular activities and sports is offered including archery, tennis, basketball, volleyball and football. Students are actively involved in decision-making processes and are encouraged to take responsibility for their educational environment. The school has an excellent tradition of examination success and the majority of students leaving The New School go on to attend universities in the UK, Commonwealth countries or the USA.

English as a Second Language: The number of non-English speakers in each class is limited, and provision is made for those students who need intensive help in English.

Location: The school is situated in a charming villa with a spacious garden in a residential area close to the centre of Rome. Originally a large family house, school buildings have retained their former character, encouraging a strong sense of community.

Facilities: School facilities include fifteen classrooms, three fully equipped laboratories for the sciences, two libraries, an art room, a music room and two sports pitches. The school also uses the CUS Roma Sports facilities for its sports programme. The school day begins at 8:45 and ends at 15:30. The academic year runs from mid-September to late June.

The New School is recognised by the Italian Ministry of Education and is a member of the Council of British Independent Schools in the European Communities (COBISEC). Admission to the school is on the basis of interviews, tests and reports from previous schools.

The philosophy of the school seeks to combine academic success with the development of personal and community responsibility. The New School encourages a sense of commitment at all levels from teachers and pupils alike, producing a very distinctive and highly successful approach to education.
