ST. GEORGE'S BRITISH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (NOMENTANA)
St. George's Nomentana Junior School was opened in September 2002 and, though very new, is very much an integral part of St. George's British International School, founded in 1958 and one of the leading English National Curriculum schools in continental Europe. The Nomentana Junior School was opened in response to repeated regrets expressed by parents of primary-age children living in the centre of Rome. These were people who wanted a first class English school, but who felt that their children were as yet too young to travel to La Storta. From tiny beginnings, the school is growing rapidly. It is set in a large, turn-of -the-century villa in its own garden. It is in the centre of Rome, off the Nomentana, an area where many of the embassies are situated. The garden provides play areas and sports facilities, supplemented by the Villa Torlonia Park immediately opposite the school. The School will have a maximum capacity of about 140 children with nine classrooms, a dining room, library and specialist rooms for art, music and computers and, if required, SEN. The school provides a British-style education for children aged 3 to 10 with a curriculum exactly the same as at St George's La Storta Junior School. The ambience, however, is slightly different: the Nomentana School is smaller and perhaps has more of a family feel. Teachers are from the UK but the children enrolling are from many countries, with no one country predominating. At the age of 11 most children are expected to move on to the St George's Senior School at La Storta, a three-form entry school large enough to provide all the facilities and opportunities required of a secondary school. Access to the school by car is good and there is a bus available from the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) at the beginning and end of the school day (8:45 and 15:30). |
