St. George's is one of the leading British-curriculum schools in continental
Europe. It is co-educational and offers a broad and demanding academic
programme, a large number of extra-curricular activities and the pastoral
care and encouragement of self-discipline which is fundamental to the
British system. The school, founded in 1958, is owned by a non-profit-making
Association and run as a limited company. It has a spacious 14-acre site
on the north side of Rome. St. George's is a member of ECIS, COBISEC and
HMC, an exclusive group of 'Public Schools' in Britain and overseas.
Although the school follows a strong British curriculum and tradition,
it is international in many other respects. The pupils represent over
60 nationalities, the majority speaking English as their first language,
and a large number would expect to stay at St. George's until the completion
of their school years. Maximum class size is 24, but with many smaller
groups. Children are put into 'sets' for subjects such as languages and
maths, according to their ability in the relevant subject.
Practically all the teachers are British, holding university degrees or
Certificates of Education, and on average have 11 years of teaching experience.
There is an average staff turnover of 5% each year. All teachers participate
in pastoral care and guidance through a tutorial system, with specialised
advice given on university entrance.
The school day is 08.45 to 15.35 with many activities after school (others
in the lunch break) and late buses available. Monday to Friday is the
normal week, with special events on certain Saturdays, and the year runs
from early September to late June with two weeks holiday at Christmas
and one at Easter. A wide range of out-of-school trips is organised by
the school (including some outside Italy).
The school follows the English National Curriculum from Keystage 1 right
through to GCSE public exams at the end of Keystage 4. These exams lead
on naturally to the International Baccalaureate, which is the qualifying
exam for universities and other further education in all over the world,
although the majority go to Britain or North America. Former pupils are
currently studying at Oxford, Cambridge, London, Bristol, Durham and nearly
thirty other universities in the UK, and at Yale, MIT, Berkeley, McGill,
as well as at most major Italian universities.
The school premises consist of the main five-storey building (originally
a catholic seminary) with additional premises for music and the very youngest
children. Facilities include a full range of standard and specialist classrooms,
five science laboratories, three Information and Communication Technology
rooms and two for Design Technology. We have a spacious air-conditioned
library, newly refurbished and containing the latest library technology
systems.
Music and Art departments are very active, and sports facilities include
grass football pitches, an athletics track, astroturf tennis and volleyball
courts, 'all-weather' basketball, 'calcetto' and hockey pitches and a
range of 'mini' courts for younger children.
There are specialist departments for S.E.N. (Special Education Needs)
and E.A.L. (English as an Additional Language). Extra tuition in preparation
for Italian State Exams is available at the school.
St. George's is five minutes from the GRA ring road and its seventeen
buses, all equipped with a mobile 'phones, serve all principal residential
areas of Rome. La Storta station, on the new metro extension, the fm3,
is three minutes walk from the school. This feeds into both the A and
the B metro lines and so rail access is quick and easy from all parts
of the city.
Admission is dependent on interview, test and reports from previous schools.
The proportion of children speaking any one language other than English
is carefully monitored. Early application is strongly recommended, particularly
for those whose English is not fluent.
