Southlands English School is a multicultural institute situated in the south of Rome, set in its own grounds. The location is five kilometres from the sea and less than one kilometre from the Caste Fusano pine forest.
The school follows the English National Curriculum and the children are prepared for their Key Stage tests as they progress through the school.
The school was founded in 1976 and has provided a warm community atmosphere for the children (and their parents) since then. Southlands has classes from Pre -Nursery (aged 2) to Year 9 (aged 13). Classes are organised in the following way:
Pre-school:-
Pre-Nursery (aged 2)
Nursery (aged 3)
Reception (aged 4)
This area has been created to provide a stimulating educational environment for children. We provide the first step from home to school with a calm, loving atmosphere and a well trained Staff.
Primary:-
Year 1 (aged 5)
Year 2 (aged 6)
Year 3 (aged 7)
Year 4 (aged 8)
Year 5 (aged 9)
Year 6 (aged 10)
At the end of Year 2 the children take their Key Stage 1 tests in compliance with National Curriculum directives. At the end of Year 6 the children take Key Stage 2 tests in English Language, Mathematics and Science. Italian children can prepare for their Italian Primary School Diploma exams (5° elementare) if required.
Secondary:-
Year 7 (aged 11)
Year 8 (aged 12)
Year 9 (aged 13)
At the end of Year 9 the children take Key Stage 3 tests in English Language, Mathematics and Science. At the end of this year, the children are also given the opportunity of taking GCSE examinations in French and Italian (where appropriate). At the end of Year 9, Italian children can take the Italian Middle School Diploma exams. (3° media)
Literacy and Numeracy support lessons are offered to students who require them and we have trained staff to teach English as a Foreign Language, to students with weak English Skills.
General Information
The school facilities include a library, computer laboratory, science laboratory, music room, art and design studio, gymnasium and dining-room. (All meals are prepared on the premises and there is a wide selection of dishes to choose from daily). All classes from Year 5 are taken to a nearby Sports Centre for their physical-education programme which includes a range of activities such as swimming, tennis and gymnastics etc. An extensive park surrounds the school with play areas, football-pitch, volley-ball-court, basketball-court, tennis ,roller-blading facilities and a large car-park.
Southlands has its own fleet of buses and children are collected directly from home in most areas of Southern Rome. Other areas can be served on request. Bus monitors accompany the children on their journey to and from school and all buses have seat-belts. Child-seats are also provided.
As an integral part of the school programme, children are taken out on day-trips throughout the school-year and from Year 6 to Year 9 a week-long field trip is organised during the Summer term where they are accompanied by the staff. Extra curricular activities such as football clubs, dance classes, homework club and music lessons are organized on the school premises after school. Swimming, tennis and dance lessons are held after school in a local sports centre and Southlands organizes buses to take the students there and home if necessary.
All children at Southlands have a yearly medical examination, there a qualified nurse is on the premises during the school day and a pediatrician comes into school once a week. We also offer a listening centre once a month with a psychologist, in which parents can discuss any family matters.
The school day is from 9.00 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. Although an extended day from 07.30 a.m. until 6.00 p.m. can be arranged. The school calendar runs from the beginning of September to the end of June. It is divided up into 3 terms and in the Autumn and Spring terms the children have a one week half-term holiday. An optional summer school programme is also offered during the month of July.
The School has official Discipline and Uniform policies which the children are expected to comply with at all times.
New pupils can be admitted at any time throughout the year subject to an interview and entrance test (where necessary). We would like to stress that the principal objectives of the teaching staff at Southlands is to provide a happy, community atmosphere in which the children are encouraged to work to their full potential to gain confidence and satisfactory results in their academic subjects and at the same time prepare them for their place in society as responsible individuals. Great emphasis is placed on identifying the individual child's needs and potential, both inside and outside the classroom. We aim to provide 'a global education for future leaders'. The staff are all native English speakers and are fully-qualified teachers, many with several years' teaching experience.
