Rome International was founded in 1988 as a sister school to the well-established
International School of Milan, founded in 1958. It is a British/International
curriculum school designed to meet the needs of the expatriate community
in Central Rome. The bilingual programme ensures that all children become
fluent in both English and Italian.
The school is situated in a large purpose built campus in the Parioli
area of Rome, a pleasant residential area in close proximity to most Embassies
with easy access to the City Centre. The school has a well stocked library,
sound proofed Music room with practice rooms, two Computer Laboratories,
a well-equipped Science Laboratory for the Middle School and well delineated
play areas within the park with easy access to the gymnasium, the football
pitch and tennis courts. Excellent bus and tramway services pass near
to the school entrance (tram n.19 and 30/; bus n.360), and school buses
run a door to door service covering most areas of the city.
Teaching Staff - All teachers are experienced graduates from British
or Commonwealth Universities, and a comprehensive in-service training
programme ensures that staff are kept in touch with current educational
policy in Britain.
Curriculum - The school curriculum is based upon the needs of international
children who from necessity may make frequent transfers not only within
Europe but worldwide. The acquisition of basic language and numeracy skills
combined with a stimulating and investigative approach to European and
World Studies ensure that children may confidently transfer from one system
to another without trauma. Close attention is paid to the English National
Curriculum which is incorporated into the school syllabus. Children are
prepared for the Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 1 Assessment Tests.
Kindergarten - A spacious, well equipped open plan area leading
into a shady garden provides a cheerful background to the developmental
play programmes guided by a team of Early Childhood teachers and carers.
Elementary School - Considerable emphasis is placed on the acquisition
of fundamental Language and Numeracy skills. Young children are usually
taught in small groups with individual reading programmes to ensure the
development of maximum potential. The bilingual programme leads to English
Common Entrance Examinations and Key Stage Two Assessment, as well as
to the Italian Elementary Certificate.
Music - A strong music programme under the guidance of the Music
Director places emphasis on the joy of making music together. All children
throughout the school enjoy music classes once or twice a week. Emphasis
is given not only to singing, but also to listening, composing and notation.
All children learn to play the recorder and the glockenspiel, and private
lessons are offered in piano, violin, clarinet, saxophone, guitar and
percussion.
Middle School Our Middle School offers a high standard in
education. Our students progress successfully into High School and the
International Baccalaureat, both in Italy and worldwide. The Middle School
also fully prepares students for the Italian Licenza Media exams for those
who may wish to go into Italian Liceo.
Sports - While the school gymnasium is used for twice weekly physical
education lessons, the school is able to offer a number of after school
sports activities on campus including Football, Basket and Volleyball,
Tennis.
Special Education Needs - A full-time specialist is on hand to assist
children with learning difficulties and to conduct diagnostic tests where
appropriate. Two ESL teachers are employed to provide intensive English
language lessons to children who arrive from overseas with limited English.
Information Technology - Computers are installed in every class
and all children from Year One up are expected to acquire a continuous
progression of skills during the elementary school to include word processing,
use of database, graphics and desk-top publishing. An Information Technology
Coordinator ensures that both hardware and software are updated, and that
teachers are given any assistance they might need. . Upper school students
have access to the Internet via two well-equipped computer labs.
Medical Service - The School Doctor attends once a week to conduct
medical check ups on all children and is available to see parents if required.
An SRN school nurse is on site at all times to provide First Aid where
necessary.
Extra Curricular Activities - These form an important aspect of
school life and a variety of clubs are available during lunch hours and
after school. These include sports, creative and musical activities.
Student Welfare - A warm welcome is given to all new children and
to their parents. Every effort is made to help both children and parents
to settle in smoothly to the new environment, the school being very aware
of the problems encountered by International families. The Head Teacher
and staff make themselves readily available to sort out all problems big
and small.
