Travel in Rome

To travel in Rome can be a frustrating and unpleasant experience. The subway is usually overcrowded with a very high risk of pick-pocketers. The buses are also often overcrowded and sometimes crawl along at an unbearable pace during the rush hour. Some Rome busses travel quicker as they are "express" and stop less frequently. To use these modes of public transport, your need to go to a "tabacchi" and buy a ticket (biglietto). You must stamp the ticket on the bus when you travel. you may transfer the ticket to another bus but you should stamp it again. You are allowed to travel on the last bus up to 75 minutes after the last stamp. You may only travel in one direction on the metro. You cannot buy your ticket on the bus or train.

Most of the interesting parts of Rome are in the centre, and most is managable by foot. So I would use public transport to travel to the centre, but once you are there, you can just wander and explore the city centre by foot.
