AMERICAN OVERSEAS SCHOOL
Founded in 1947, non-profit and independent, the school is operated under the direction of a parent-elected Board of Trustees. The American based curriculum serves the English-speaking community and international communities of Rome. AOSR is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The curriculum of the Elementary School is designed to follow the generally accepted philosophy and ideals of American education. Specialists teach art, physical education, music, theater, computer, English as a Second Language, reading, and Italian. Italian students will continue to be prepared for the quinta elementare examination as long as it is required by the Italian Ministry of Education. The Middle School standards at AOSR are rigorous and challenging for all students. The ability to think critically, solve problems and communicate effectively are our main goals. Focus on the core subjects of language arts, mathematics, science and social studies enables students to develop skills for lifelong learning. A strong foreign language program requires students to study Italian and allows them to select French, as well. Italian students will continue to be prepared for the prima, seconda, and terza media exams as long as they are required by the Italian Ministry of Education. All students are exposed to a variety of enrichment courses such as drama, art, computer, and music. Physical education continues to be an integral part of the curriculum. Student government, cultural trips, and after school activities supplement the already rich and diverse atmosphere in the middle school. The High School is a college preparatory day and boarding school offering a range of one year and semester courses. The boarding program, for approximately thirty students, provides a caring, structured living and academic environment for a small group of students. A ten-subject Advanced Placement Program and the International Baccalaureate Program are available, as well as a post-graduate (13th) year. Over the years, virtually all of our graduates have attended universities in the United States, England, Italy, and throughout the world. An effort is made in all grades to kindle an awareness of Rome, Italy and AOSR's international setting through field trips, lecture series, courses in art history, archaeology, Model UN, and the teaching of Italian beginning in kindergarten. French is offered from the sixth grade through High School Advanced Placement. Support services include a reading specialist, ESL teachers, special needs educators, and a college counselor. In addition to the high school inter-scholastic athletic program in volleyball, wrestling, basketball, cross-country, tennis and soccer, a variety of after-school activities are available for students. These include chorus, computer science, soccer, softball, tennis, yearbook, drama, dance, and arts & crafts, among others. The six acre suburban campus includes two automated libraries with a combined total of 22,000 volumes, three computer laboratories with 80 computers, a gymnasium, a weight room, a cafeteria and auditorium, two tennis courts, a soccer field, an infirmary and a hillside theatre. All teachers hold university degrees and nearly sixty percent have advanced degrees. They average twenty years of experience, thirteen years at AOSR. School begins in early September and closes in mid-June. Admission is based on previous performance and the student's ability to benefit from the school's program. Bus transportation is available.
